TREND REPORT: DARK SHADOWS

by snapped4style on May 15, 2012

Have you ever noticed those fairy tales we grew up with like Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White to name a few were often dark and twisted even though they all lived “Happily Ever After”?  Well with Fairy Tales taking on the big screen, it looks like the fashion world has taken a liking and is also embracing this dark role.  Fetish inspired looks continue to have a huge impact in fashion and now we’re moving into goth chic with a touch of Cindy Crawford-esque 90′s make up and a dash 1920s/burlesque flair.

Also, stay tuned as I go into more depth as to how these childhood fables are impacting trends for 2012 as a writing contributor on Fashion Parkway.

Here, Jessica Alba for Marie Claire June 2012 : This photo captures retro/90s glam with Jessica’s hair in a sleek bun, soft drop back dress, and elegant gloves.  The color story here is a mixture of dark maroons and plums.

In this picture retro/90s’ glam meets goth with a veiled face, heavy make-up, sheer fabrics and fetish inspired belt.  Color story is brick reds and black.

Tom Cruise for W Magazine June 2012

Jennifer Lopez at the premiere of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”.  Checkout her ruby red ring..very Snow White inspired, while her dress reflects that 1920s feel.  Again we’re seeing a dark play on make-up with plum/maroon lips and nails.

   The heavy 90′s/burlesque 20′s makeup.

Last but not least, Kristen Stewart for ELLE June 2012, where dominatrix and goth goes high-fashion.
Below Kristen and Kristen have the smokey eye with heavy eye make-up still the focal point of the face, and again ruby red nails…very 20s very Snow White and The Huntsman.
