I like to be ahead of the trends and that’s one of the reasons I write this blog so that you’re ahead of things too and so that you can make a trend of your own before it becomes “cool”. Something about being ahead of the trends makes me feel unique, like I had an intuition and went for it. That I took I risks to look “ridiculous” to most people, yet to me it’s more like bold, adventurous. That’s why when I saw this picture in this month’s July 2012 issue of Glamour Magazine, I freaked! She’s wearing gold lipstick!
Here’s how it looks in real life…I wore gold lipstick a summer ago…here’s the link. In 2009 with movies and TV series based on Greek Myths, the gold trend was in effect, hints of gold lipstick were seen on runways and I loved it so I said, f*ck it I’m wearing it.
I put some on and I asked my Grandmother aka my strongest critic “What do you think ?”. She said, “It looks nice.” This is coming from a lady who sometimes find fault in everything and has called my one piece jumpsuits and maxi dresses pajamas so when she gave the ok I was amped!
So I get my outfit together for a Saturday night on the town with my guy friend “Shaun”. I meet him on the train platform and first thing he says when he sees me is “Take that shit off.”
ME: (laughing) No, I like it.
SHAUN: Take that shit off, you look ridiculous.
ME: I don’t care what you think, I like it and it’s staying on, now get used to it.” Now mind you I had to get on the train and I did get some looks, but as long as I feel confident that’s what matters. I felt cool and fierce at the same time.
What’s funny is that when I saw this pic in Glamour I was at the hair salon and my colorists had the same reaction Shaun did, that’s “ridiculous” who would wear Gold Lipstick…blah blah blah blah.
I told her “I have” and that I thought this girl in Glamour looked hot!
If you like bold, if you like eccentric, if you like color, if you’re edgy, like being different, or hell you just like it…WEAR IT! Why is it ridiculous, because you wouldn’t wear it ? Because you don’t have the courage to wear it ? Because you don’t like it ? Opinions make the world go round and by human nature we let ourselves get caught up in them sometimes. The fashion world is guilty of criticism too so much so that they encourage you to do your thing, but will knock you for doing it if it doesn’t fit into the ideal.
You know what I say ? GO FOR GOLD! In all senses of the words.
